Collection: Valerie White
After a long career as an attorney, I discovered acrylic painting and mixed media art and quickly fell in love with the color, freedom, creativity, and ability to lose oneself in the process. I especially enjoy creating vibrant abstracts as well as loose cityscapes, landscapes, figures, and florals. My pieces are driven by emotion rather than elaborate plan or design. After developing a broad concept for a piece, I let my organic response to the process drive the decision-making.
I have been thrilled to have my work publicly recognized. In 2022, my mixed media piece, “Large Reclining Nude: Body Image Edition”, won Best in Show in the Fabulous Forgeries show at the Virginia Beach Art Center judged by Lloyd DeWitt, Chief Curator at the Chrysler Museum. My mixed media piece, “Diversity”, was selected by the NEON Public Art Committee for display at the former Greyhound Bus Station in Norfolk, VA. Together with my husband Matthew, the Gallery at the Cuffee Library in Chesapeake hosted a month-long duo exhibition entitled “Opposites Attract: The Abstract Art of Valerie and Matthew White.”
In 2023, I was honored to be invited to join The Artist’s Gallery as a Resident Artist and am looking forward to teaching a mixed media class at the Virginia Beach Art Center. Most recently, my abstract piece “More is More” was selected as the promotion poster cover art for the “Out of the Box” January 2024 show at the Virginia Beach Art Center and awarded an Honorable Mention. My abstract paper tapestry series “Dream Weaver” is currently on exhibition at TowneBank in Virginia Beach. I have participated in numerous juried art shows throughout the region and have donated pieces for local charitable auctions.
