Norene has been a sumi-e painter since 1990, using Chinese ink and or watercolors on various types of rice paper. I paint the subjects I love, primarily from nature: flowers, trees, birds, insects and fish.

Of the varied styles of sumi-e painting, my style has found its roots from the traditional techniques. These techniques rely on the proper loading of the brush and it’s manipulation, with emphasis on the control of ink/color and water on the paper, along with the “chi” (energy) of the strokes and the final composition. It is the essence of the subject that is to be captured from memory, not an exactness of the subject.
