Monica Van Dyke Johnson is an artist living on the Chesapeake Bay in Norfolk, Virginia. Her mother taught her the beauty of home and music, her father shared his love of travel and the sea, and her family and friends share the beauty of their surroundings and special moments in time.
Her professional life led her to collaborate with some of the brightest minds in the country as her peers created extraordinary built environments that have an amazing sense of place and foster community, yet treasure and protect the landscape and wildlife. The culmination of these experiences has manifested into a longing to capture environments on canvas. Capturing the freedom of a bird as it soars through the sky, her husband’s comfort after returning from work to relax with their dogs, her granddaughter’s “ballet” as she and her dog dress in pink tutus on a sun-lit stair...these are the environments of life. As an artist, Monica strives to capture these simple moments and express the emotion and the impact of place in her work.
