Alison Sykes-Fryer


Alison is a national and regional award winning artist who has lived and worked in Virginia Beach for ten years. Her work explores emotional landscapes that shape our existence, and reveal the different layers of connection between people and the world around us. As an artist she is driven by a relentless curiosity and a need to communicate what words alone cannot.

Her inspiration is drawn from a deep rooted love of design in nature and urban landscapes and from personal experiences. Studying and teaching science where observation and interpretation are key skills, together with being surrounded by writers, actors, musicians and instrument makers in formative years, are evidenced in her work.

The process of creation involves sketching an idea inspired by her portfolio of photographs and research materials, followed by layering pieces of recycled printed materials with splashes of acrylic paint and inks. These materials help to reinforce observations and create vibrancy. Alison's aim is to create art which acts as a mirror, reflecting the viewer's own experiences and emotions, while also introducing them to different perspectives.
